The Formula For Living Forever

Elizabeth Blackburn (born 1948) of the University of California shared the Nobel Prize for the discovery of the enzyme that repairs telomeres.

Telomeres are the "caps" at the end of our chromosomes which shorten each time a cell divides (about 50-70 times during a lifetime). Unfortunately, when telomeres can no longer grow, the cell stops dividing, resulting in aging, and finally death.

She and other scientists are studying ways to stop the shortening, and hopefully one day coax the telomeres to lengthen, thereby increasing lifespan.

Proof Beyond a Reasonable Doubt

The allegory of early man as an infant...

An infant, lays in his crib.  The ceiling light captures his attention and he looks up, trying to understand it.

Between the crib and the light in the ceiling, strange shapes turn – a battery operated carousel of plastic grey elephants, yellow giraffes, blue birds and brown teddy bears.  The infant doesn’t understand the shapes, but they interest him nonetheless.

His eyes follow their movements, all the while anticipating their circular route.  The baby doesn’t know yet about batteries – or even the nature of colors.  He probably isn’t even wondering who the provider of the universe above his head might be....

Directed Transpermia

Professor Francis Crick (1916 - 2004), the co-discoverer of the double helix structure of the DNA molecule, proposed the theory of directed panspermia in 1973.

For Professor Crick, this theory offers an interesting explanation for the origin of life and mankind.

Professor Crick did not believe that very complex DNA could evolve by itself on earth in the short geologic span of time that it did.  He stated, “You would be more likely to assemble a fully functioning and flying jumbo jet by passing a hurricane through a junk yard than you would be to assemble the DNA molecule by chance.  In any kind of primeval soup in 5 or 600 million years, it’s just not possible.”
